Thinnings on the track to create a mixed stand

Thinning

Forests need to be renewed and managed in ways that ensure their long-term sustainability and productivity, as well as rapid carbon sequestration and high quality timber.

Description of the action

Depending on the soil (habitat type) and the target tree species, it is recommended to design a multi-species forest (mixed stand), especially on fertile soils (deciduous forest, montane forest, deciduous oak forest).

Why?

Mixed plantations are more diverse, although not always more productive or the best carbon sinks. At the same time, species diversity reduces the risk of a single disease affecting the whole stand.
