Forests need to be renewed and managed in ways that ensure their long-term sustainability and productivity, as well as rapid carbon sequestration and high quality timber.
Description of the action
According to climate models, the temperature in Estonia will rise by up to 2 degrees, which will not change the tree species growing in Estonia. It is still reasonable to renew clear-cut areas with pine, spruce, birch, aspen, and black alder. To ensure diversity and create habitats, also leave hardwoods and linden to grow to the extent that they do not hinder the growth of the target tree species.
Why?
According to climate models, Estonia’s climate is expected to resemble that of present-day southern Lithuania. The same tree species that thrive in Estonia today also grow successfully there. Additionally, demand for Nordic pine and spruce timber is expected to remain strong in the future.
