Afforestation

Afforestation aims to change land use from non-forest to forest land in a way that ensures the long-term sustainability and productivity of new forests, as well as rapid carbon sequestration and high quality timber.

Description of the action

When afforesting grassland and arable land, retain low trees and shrubs (e.g. gorse, hickory, holly, birch, crabapple, hawthorn, rowan) to an extent that does not impede the growth of the target tree species.

Why?

Many shrub species flower and bear berries that provide food for insects, birds and mammals.
