Maintain resilient natural forest renewal

Forests need to be renewed and managed in ways that ensure their long-term sustainability and productivity, as well as rapid carbon sequestration and high quality timber.

Description of the action

Preserve natural viable regeneration (e.g., spruce with a longer leader growth than lateral growth, pine with “plump” and dark green needles).

Why?

Preserving natural viable regeneration reduces forest renewal costs. Local tree offspring are usually well adapted to their specific location (e.g., late-flushing or early-flushing forms, suitable for local moisture conditions). However, in some cases, replacing local tree offspring is necessary (e.g., establishing silver birch instead of drained swamp birch). Later thinning of regeneration is important during forest renewal maintenance and/or selective cutting.
