Maintain natural vigorous regrowth

Clear-cutting

Forests need to be renewed and managed in ways that ensure their long-term sustainability and productivity, as well as rapid carbon sequestration and high quality timber.

Description of the action

Maintain natural vigorous succession (e.g. spruce with longer crowns than side shoots, pine with “fleshy” and dark green thorns).

Why?

Maintaining viable regeneration reduces the cost of reforestation. The progeny of native trees are usually well adapted to the site (e.g. late-sprouting or early-sprouting form, adapted to local moisture conditions). However, in some cases it is necessary to replace the progeny of native trees, e.g. by planting scarce scrub in place of drained swamp scrub. Subsequent thinning of the succession during afforestation maintenance and/or clear cutting is important.
