Preserve wood in buffer strips across different decomposition stages

Habitat Function Type of work
Open landscape
Living environment
Creation of green / wildlife corridors

To preserve biodiversity and ensure ecological connectivity, buffer strips are established and maintained in open landscapes. These buffer strips also protect other ecosystems from agricultural pesticides and chemically synthesized mineral fertilizers. The recommended width of an open landscape buffer strip is an average of 5 meters, with an optimal range of 1-10 meters.

Description of the action

Preserve standing deadwood, stumps, and fallen wood in buffer strips of open landscapes.

Why?

Many species rely on dying and dead wood for survival. Most of these are wood-decomposing species, which are essential in nature; otherwise, dead trees would accumulate in layers. Hollow-nesting birds and other animal species also use such trees.
