Establishment of buffer strips for waterbodies

Buffer strips will be established and maintained along the banks of natural watercourses to maintain biodiversity and ensure ecological connectivity. The recommended width of the buffer strips is 5 metres on average, with an optimum of 1-10 metres.

Description of the action

Do not break up the soil or the established chamber in the buffer strip of the water body. The buffer strip may also be a grassland-like community with an established herbaceous cover.

Why?

In the buffer strip of a water body, it is important not to break up the established chamber, so that no sediment or suspended sediment enters the water body. Low water levels and mud at the edges of watercourses provide a safe habitat for waterfowl, but also benefit terrestrial species that use muddy margins or banks for breeding.
