Forests need to be renewed and managed in ways that ensure their long-term sustainability and productivity, as well as rapid carbon sequestration and high quality timber.
Description of the action
To reduce excess moisture on clear-cut areas, create furrow drainage to direct surface water away.
Why?
Clearcutting alters the forest’s moisture regime. The transpiration process (water evaporation through leaves and needles) of large trees ceases, and in moist and wet soils, excess moisture may accumulate, hindering forest regeneration.
