Create wetland networks and individual water eyes

Habitat Function Type of work

Waterbody management

Wetland networks will be established to maintain biodiversity and ensure ecological connectivity.

Description of the action

Create networks of ponds and other wetlands in good condition or individual water eyes. The best water eyes are sunny and have shallow edges. They should be 50-60 cm wide and 1.5 m deep. The banks of the water holes should be 5-15 cm deep with steps.

Why?

Networks of ponds and wetlands are essential for amphibian reproduction. Snakes are also strongly linked to ponds and other wetter areas as they feed on amphibians. Birds and mammals use wetlands for drinking. In grassed landscapes, newly created ponds/waterholes may be the only wet habitats. Networked ponds/waterholes provide more of the necessary conditions for wildlife in changing environmental conditions.
