Create open landscape green corridors

Habitat Function Type of work
Open space
Living environment
Creation of movement / green corridors

Open landscape buffer strips will be established and maintained to maintain biodiversity and ecological connectivity. The buffer strips will also protect other ecosystems from pesticides and chemically synthesised mineral fertilisers used on agricultural land. The recommended width of the open space buffer strips is an average of 5 metres, with an optimum of 1-10 metres.

Description of the action

Create green corridors in open landscapes using hedges, buffer strips or other natural features to increase connectivity. Plan buffer strips in a staggered pattern – taller shrubs, grasses and short grass. Also, plan the species to be planted so that their flowering time varies.

Why?

Green corridors are natural areas that connect different habitats, allowing animals and plants to move, migrate, find food and mate. This helps to prevent species from becoming isolated and supports their survival. Green corridors support both the conservation of species and the maintenance of their habitats. Plant plants in a winding pattern or in clumps to avoid wind tunnels. Staggering helps to maintain the diversity of natural habitats. Variable flowering times provide longer nectar and pollen for species that depend on it.
