Clear blocked forebay drains on the thinning track

Thinning

Based on climate models, precipitation is increasing in Estonia, which makes it necessary to establish and maintain a high quality drainage system and ditching to adapt to climate change. Forest drainage ensures forest productivity, faster carbon sequestration in wood, and also creates water-related habitats.

Description of the action

In mowing, frontage ditches and drainage ditches blocked by cuttings or silt need to be repaired to ensure the drainage system works.

Why?

Mowing and winding up can cause debris to enter the ditch, or driving through the ditch can break the sides and profile of the ditch, and driving a forwarder along the ditch can cause mud to sink into the ditch. Any blockage must be cleared quickly (as soon as possible) to avoid flooding, forest damage or death.
