Water bodies management
Wetland networks are established to support biodiversity and ecological connectivity.
Description of the action
Create networks of well-maintained ponds and other wetlands or individual water bodies. The best water bodies are in sunlight and have shallow edges. They should be 50-60 cm wide and 1.5 meters deep. The banks of water bodies should have stepped edges of 5-15 cm depth.
Why?
Pond and wetland networks are essential for amphibian reproduction. Snakes are also closely associated with ponds and wetter areas, as they feed on amphibians. Birds and mammals use wetlands for drinking. In cultivated landscapes, newly created ponds or water bodies may be the only wetland habitats available. Ponds and water bodies established as networks provide better conditions for wildlife in changing environmental conditions.
